pop. 8,177), 30 mi/48 km SW of New Providence
Isl., W Bahamas; 24°35'N 78°00'W. Considered to be one isl., it is
actually a tightly grouped archipelago intersected by narrow, navigable
channels. It possesses the largest land mass of the Bahamas and the
only river in the country, the 15 mi/24 km
Goose R. The isls. are largely wooded, and pine forests, creeks, and
mangrove swamps predominate. Agr. (fruits, vegetables); timber. Most of
the pop. lives in small settlements (includes Nicholl's Town, Kemp's
Bay, and Andros Town) along the E coast. Called Espiritu Santo by the
Spaniards, it was permanently settled in 1787.
