(AN-nis-tuhn), city (1990 pop. 26,623),
Calhoun co., NE Ala., in a mining region of the Appalachian foothills.
Diverse mfg. includes soil pipes, textiles, lumber, bricks, cabinets,
and vaccines. Founded (1872) as an iron-manufacturing company
town, it was opened to the public in 1883. The Anniston Army Depot,
located W of town, is a large ordnance depot and weapons incineration
site. Fort McClellan, N of town, is former hq. of the U.S.
Army Military Police and Chemical regiments and a research and
development center for chemical and biological weapons, but its
