Houlton; 46°38'N 68°35'W. One of nation's richest agr. areas, esp.
for potatoes. Large tracts of lake-studded wilderness furnish lumber
and offer hunting, fishing, canoeing; manganese deposits; mfg.
(wood prods., farm machinery, food prods., fertilizers). Drained by
Allagash, Aroostook, Fish, Little Madawaska, Machias, Mattawamkeag,
Meduxnekeag, and St. John rivers. Formed 1839.
