Artibonite River
(ahr-tee-bo-NEE-tai), Span.
Artibonito, largest stream of Hispaniola isl.; rises in
Dominican Republic in Cordillera Central near Haiti line SW of
Santiago; flows SW, W, and NW, partly along internatl. border, and into
Haiti, through fertile Artibonite Plain, past Mirebalais and
Petite-Riviere-de-l'Artibonite, to Gulf of Gonaives
10 mi/16 km NNW of Saint-Marc;
c.150 mi/241 km long. Navigable for small
boats c.100 mi/161 km upstream. Used for
irrigation. Principal affluent, Guayamouc R.
