junction. Trade, shipping, and industrial center in a rich farm area.
Mfg. (leather goods, consumer goods, feeds, steel pipe; metal casting,
corn milling). Founded (1854) near a military post, est. 1818-1819 on
Cow Isl. in the Mo. R. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe RR was
chartered here in 1859, and the city boomed as an important
wagon-train, river, and RR terminal, one of the outfitting points for
westward travel. Benedictine Col. and Amelia Earhart home are located
here. Atchison State Fishing L. to N. Inc. as a city 1881.
