Athabasca, Lake
, 4th-largest lake
(c.3,120 sq mi/8,100 sq km) of
Canada, NE Alta. and SW Sask., W Canada, at the edge of the Can.
Shield; c.200 mi/320 km long,
5 mi./8 km-35 mi/56 km
wide; 59°10'N 109°30'W. A part of the Mackenzie R. system; receives
the Athabasca R. from the S and drains N into Great Slave L. via the
Slave R. Gold and uranium nearby. Fort Chipewyan was built (1788) at W
end of the lake by Roderick McKenzie of the North West Co. and has been
maintained. Steamers of the Hudson's Bay Co. ply the lake in summer
bet. Chipewyan and Fond du Lac, from where the canoe route runs by way
of Wollaston and Reindeer lakes to the Churchill R. Philip Turnor, the
Br. surveyor, surveyed and mapped the lake 1790-1792.
