(ATH-uhnz), city (1990 pop.
45,734), Clarke co., NE Ga., on the Oconee R., in a piedmont
area; 33°58'N 83°23'W. Founded as the site of the Univ. of Ga.; its
industries include poultry processing and mfg. (textiles, electronic
goods, rope, industrial power supplies, pharmaceuticals, clocks and
watches, clothing; printing and publishing, food packaging). Research
and development facilities were added in the 1980s. Numerous Ga.
statesmen have lived here, and some of their houses are among the
city's fine examples of classic revival stylethe Howell
Cobb house (1850), the T. R. R. Cobb house (1830-1843), and the Joseph
H. Lumpkin house (c.1845). Airport. Inc. 1806. The city and univ.
hosted soccer events at Sanford Stadium during the 1996 Summer Olympic
Games.
