Androscoggin co., SW Maine, on the Androscoggin R. (crossed by
several bridges) opposite Lewiston; 44°04'N 70°15'W. Shoes have
been manufactured here since c.1835; industry (also brick mfg.) is
declining. Livestock. With Lewiston, Auburn forms one of the most
important industrial complexes in Maine; abundant water power has
spurred a large variety of mfg. Lost Valley Ski Resort is here; hotels
nearby. Settled 1765 on the site of a Native Amer. village, inc. 1842.
