2 mi/3 km in diameter, Iberia parish, S La.,
9 mi/14 km SW of New Iberia, forming a low
rise in an area of sea marshes and cypress swamps; 29°53'N 91°54'W.
RR terminus. Mfg. of salt, sauces (tabasco). The isl.'s former owner,
Edward Avery McIlhenny, author of Bird City, created Jungle
Gardens and Bird Sanctuary, which contains many rare flora. Cayenne peppers are produced here.
Salt mines in area since 1791. Intracoastal Waterway runs E-W bet. isl. and
coast. Vermilion Bay extension of Gulf of Mexico
