92°04'W. Partly bounded N and E by Red R., SW by Bayou Boeuf, on E by
Atchafalaya R., and Saline Bayou (with Saline L.) forms part of N
boundary. Northernmost of the Acadian parishes of S La. Agr. (cotton,
berries, corn, sorghum, hay, soybeans, sugarcane, sweet potatoes,
vegetables; cattle, hogs, horses; honey); crawfish; mfg. (food prods.,
clothing); logging. Includes Eola oil and natural-gas field. Large
casino on land owned by Tunica-Biloxi Native Americans. Has several
lakes in NE. Marksville State Commemorative Area in W center, Grassy
Lake State Wildlife Area in NE, Pomme de Terre and Spring Bayou State
Wildlife Areas at center, part of Grand Cote Natl. Wildlife Refuge in
W, Lake Ophelia Natl. Wildlife Refuge in N. Named after the Avoyelle
Native tribe. Formed 1807.
