(bah-ho-ROO-ko), province (
1,347 sq mi/3,489 sq km; 1993
pop. 101,742), SW Dominican Republic, on Haiti border; Neiba;
18°30'N 71°21'W. Bounded by Sierra de Neiba (N) and Sierra de
Bahoruco (S), watered by the Yaque del Sur. In its center is L.
Enriquillo, a salt lake c.150 ft/46 m below
sea level. In the fertile, irrigated depression are grown
coffee, corn, rice, sugarcane, bananas, vegetables. Rich in
fine tropical wood. Fishing and hunting at L. Enriquillo. Large salt
deposits near Neiba. Formerly a part of Barahona prov., it was set up
1943.
