692,134), N Md.; Towson; 39°26'N 76°37'W. Almost surrounds
independent Baltimore city. Co. is bounded N by Pa. line, SE by
Gunpowder R. and Chesapeake Bay, S and SW by Patapsco R.; also drained
by Gunpowder Falls (stream), in which are Prettyboy and Loch Raven
dams. The reservoir formed by the dams, along with Liberty Reservoir on
the Patapasco R., provides the area's water. Co. contains suburbs of
Baltimore; mfg. of steel and ships (Sparrows Point, Back R.), aircraft
(Middle R.), communications equip., electric tools, scientific
instruments. Fruit and dairy farms supply Baltimore market. Deeply
indented bay shore (extreme SE) has summer resorts and industrial
areas. In central part are estates (including Hampton Natl. Historic
Site near Towson) in dist. known for horse racing (especially
cross-country races), fox hunting, and jousting tournaments. Ballestone
Mus. (c.1780) at the Rocky Point Golf Course was built by George
Washington's grandfather. Co. includes part of Patapsco State Park and
L. Roland. Formed in 1659, Baltimore co. and Baltimore city were
separated 1851.
