Bannack
(BAHN-nuhk), village (1990 pop. 50), Beaverhead co., SW
Mont., 17 mi/27 km W of Dillon, on Grasshopper
Creek (also known as Willard's Creek). Founded in 1862 with discovery
of gold along creek, the 1st gold strike in Mont. Bannack became
Mont.'s 1st territorial capital (1864-1865). It declined when many
miners left the thin deposits for the richer gold fields near Virginia
City, Mont. Bannack State Park now preserves the historic bldgs. of
this virtual ghost town. Beaverhead Natl. Forest to W. Formerly spelled
Bannock.
