, town (1990 pop. 2,768), Hancock co., SE Maine, on
Mt. Desert Isl. and on Frenchman Bay, and
15 mi/24 km SE of Ellsworth; 44°22'N
68°12'W. It was a famed New England resort for the wealthy during the
19th cent. Bar Harbor is a port of entry, with ferry connections to
Yarmouth, N.S., during the summer. In Oct. 1947, a large part of the
town was destroyed by a forest fire. Nearby Acadia Natl. Park is a
major tourist attraction. Settled 1763, inc. 1796.
