Barataria Bay (bar-uh-TER-ee-uh), SE La., separated from the Gulf of Mexico by Grand Isle and Grand Terre Isl., as well as other isls.; 29°22'N 89°56'W. Linked to Intracoastal Waterway to N by Bayou St. Denis. The bay is the major center of the La. shrimp industry and is trapped for muskrat furs. Oil and natural gas wells in area; bay region a major source of sulphur. In the early 19th cent. the bay was the hq. of Jean Laffite and his pirates.
