Bardstown , town (1990 pop. 6,801), Nelson co., central Ky., SE of Louisville; 37°48'N 85°27'W. Elev. 647 ft/197 m. In a rich farm area (burley tobacco, grain, soybeans; livestock; dairying). The city is known for its distilleries, thus its nickname “Bourbon Capital of the World.” RR spur terminus. Mfg. (consumer goods, beverages, furniture, bldg. materials, electrical equip., metal fabrication, plastics, printing and publishing). A monument to Amer. steamboat inventor (1791) John Fitch is in Bardstown. My Old Kentucky Home State Park., 1 mi/1.6 km to E, has “Federal Hill,” home of Judge John Rowan (built c.1818), where his cousin Stephen Foster was inspired to write the song “My Old Kentucky Home” in 1952; Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest to NW. Of note are the Cathedral of St. Joseph (1816-1819), whose paintings were given by Louis Philippe of France, and the Gethsemani Farms Trappist monastery (1848) to SW. The Barton Mus. of Whiskey History is a short distance away, distillery tours, to S. In the Civil War, Bardstown was occupied (Sept. 1862) by Gen. Braxton Bragg's Confederate army. Settled 1775, inc. 1780.
