Barkley, Lake , reservoir, SW Ky. and NW Tenn., on Cumberland R., formed by Barkley Dam (completed 1966), on Lyon/Livingston co. line, Ky., 23 mi/37 km E of Paducah, and 3 mi/4.8 km E of Kentucky Dam (Tennessee R.); c.60 mi/97 km long; 37°02'N 88°13'W. Lake extends E to Eddyville, then S through Lyon and Trigg cos., Ky., and Stewart co., Tenn., past Dover, Tenn. Max. capacity 2,082,000 acre-ft. Little R. forms 8-mi/12.9-km E arm. Lake parallels Kentucky L. reservoir (Tennesse R.) c.7 mi/11.3 km to W; land between the Lakes Recreation Area (managed by TVA) is bet. them. Short channel connects the lakes just above (S of) their respective dams. Cumberland City, Tenn., at S tip. Surrounded by natural reserves, including Cross Creeks Natl. Wildlife Refuge (S). Towns of Eddyville and Kuttawa, Ky., were moved (c. 1960) to allow for flooding of lake. Hydroelectricity, part of TVA system; recreation. Lake is c.60 mi/97 km long, 2 mi/3.2 km wide.
