central Md., 25 mi/40 km NW of Washington,
D.C.; 39°13'N 77°23'W. Nearby is the Al Marah Arabian horse farm
and mus., reputedly the largest privately owned one in world. Named for
William Barnes, a local landowner who later moved to Ohio and founded
Barnesville in Belmont co. A mass grave of working men who died of
cholera building the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is in the yard of St.
Mary's Church here.
