71°16'N 156°48'W. It is the northernmost U.S. settlement and the
main trade center of N Alaska. Predominantly Inuit pop. Hunting of
whales, employment with govt. agencies (esp. oil-rich North Slope
borough), basketry, carving of ivory and bone, and tourism are
important. Has a private col.; surrounded by Natl. Petroleum
Reserve-Alaska, which extends S to Brooks Range and E to Colville R. Of
interest are the nearby Will Rogers-Wiley Post monument and Birnirk,
the site of an anc. Eskimo cultural and trade center. Oil fields were
found in 1967 in the area of Prudhoe Bay, on the Arctic coast, from
which Barrow receives substantial revenues. Inc. 1958.
