Barrow, Point
, northernmost point of Alaska, on Arctic Ocean,
9 mi/14.5 km NE of Barrow; 71°23'N
156°30'W. Discovered 1826 by F. W. Beechey and named for Sir John
Barrow. Has played important part in Arctic exploration and aviation;
starting point of Sir Hubert Wilkins's flight (1928) across North
Pole. Naval base and research facility was est. 1944,
6 mi/9.7 km S of point, closed in 1970s. U.S.
meteorological station set up here during 1st Internatl. Polar Year,
1882-1883.
