, town (1990 pop. 530), Allegany co., W Md., in
the Alleghenies, and 17 mi/27 km WSW of
Cumberland; 39°32'N 79°01'W. In bituminous-coal-mining area. Near
Dans Mt. State Park. Named for Barton-on-Humber, the birthplace of the
founder, Major Andrew Bruce Shaw. A heavy rainstorm in 1810 exposed
a mountain of coal in the area known as Potomac Hollow. Mining
didn't begin until 1854, though. Inc. 1900.
