Basse-Terre
(bahs-TER), town (1982 pop. 13,656), on SSW corner
of Basse-Terre Isl., Guadeloupe, in the West Indies; 16°00'N
61°43'W. Basse-Terre is a port that ships the prods. of the
surrounding agr. area. Founded by the French in 1643, it retains its
Fr. colonial atmosphere. Its commercial prosperity passed to
Pointe-a-Pitre in the late 18th cent. The town was destroyed by a
hurricane in 1979, setting back prospects for economic
development.
