Basse-Terre
(bahs-TER), island (
364 sq mi/943 sq km), the W half
of Guadeloupe, is separated from Grande-Terre by narrow Riviere
Salee channel; 16°10'N 61°40'W. It is rocky and mountainous;
its highest point is active volcano Soufriere
(4,869 ft/1,484 m). Chief prods. grown along
the coast are cacao, coffee, vanilla, bananas, bay leaves,
sugarcane. The isl. is sometimes referred to as Guadeloupe isl.
