13 mi/21 km WSW of Joplin, Mo.; 37°01'N
94°44'W. RR junction. Mfg. (chemical equip., apparel, food
processing, furniture, construction machinery). Grew as cattle town in
1860s and 1870s. Nearby monument commemorates Baxter Springs Massacre
(1863), in which 87 Union soldiers were killed by guerrilla band under
William Quantrill. Settled c. 1850, inc. 1868.
