along Atlantic coast from New R. (S) to St. Helena Sound (NE) bounded
by Combahee R. (NE) and New R. SW. Includes several of Sea Isls.,
notably Port Royal Isl. (site of Beaufort), Parris Isl., St. Helena
Isl., Hilton Head Isl. Intracoastal Waterway passes along coast.
Includes Hunting Isl. State Park in E section. Formerly a region of
great plantations; now a year-round resort area, with fishing, canning,
agr. (corn, soybeans, tomatoes; cattle, hogs), lumbering. Formed
1785.
