notably Port Royal Isl. (site of Beaufort), Parris Isl., St. Helena
Isl., Hilton Head Isl. Intracoastal Waterway passes along coast.
Includes Hunting Isl. State Park in E section. Formerly a region of
great plantations; now a year-round resort area, with fishing, canning,
agr. (corn, soybeans, tomatoes; cattle, hogs), lumbering. Formed
