Isl., one of Sea Isls.; 32°25'N 80°41'W. Located on the
Intracoastal Waterway with a bridge crossing to St. Helena Isl.
Year-round resort and tourist center; canning, processing, and shipping
point for truck, shrimping, oystering, and lumbering area, with good
harbor. Mfg. includes consumer goods, plastic prods., apparel,
machinery, fabricated metal prods. Is the 2d-oldest town in S.C.;
founded 1711. Held by Union forces from Nov. 1861, to end of Civil War.
Has many fine old bldgs., including Episcopal church (built 1724;
remodeled), natl. cemetery, arsenal (1795).
