Berkeley , city (1990 pop. 102,724), Alameda co., W Calif., suburb 4 mi/6.4 km N of downtown Oakland, adjoins Oakland, on the E shore of San Francisco Bay; 37°52'N 122°18'W. Mfg. (lab instruments, fabricated metal prods., construction materials, machinery, chemicals, consumer goods, printing ink, vitreous china, electronic equip., biological prods., copper artwork, foods, medical instruments; printing and publishing, metal smelting, electroplating; iron foundry, winery [sake]). Originally part of the Rancho San Antonio granted to the Peralta family in 1820 by the Span. crown, the site was purchased by Americans in 1853. The settlement, at first called Oceanview, was named Berkeley in 1866. The city's pop. increased significantly after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Seat of a campus of the Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley and several divinity schools. The campus of the former was a center for student unrest and the “counterculture” movement throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Points of interest in Berkeley include a marina; Tilden Park; Univ. Mus.; Lawrence Hall of Science; Berkeley Aquatic Park; and Armstrong Col. (1918). Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, an atomic research center, is nearby. Berkeley Hills to NE; Charles L. Tilden Regional Park to N. Inc. 1878.
