, city (1990 pop. 38,195), Essex co., NE Mass.,
on Mass. Bay; 42°34'N 70°51'W. Its chief manufactures are research,
electronic and scientific equip., consumer goods, and chemicals.
Settled in 1626 by Roger Conant, 1 of the founders of Mass. In 1775 the
schooner Hannah, the 1st ship of the U.S. navy, was outfitted
here and commissioned by Gen. George Washington at Glover's Wharf. In
1787, Beverly became the site of the 1st cotton mill in the U.S. Points
of interest include Balch house (1636), believed to be the oldest house
in the U.S.; the John Cabot house (1781), which is preserved as a mus.;
the John Hale house (1694); and several other Colonial bldgs. Beverly
Farms, a residential and resort sect. of the city, was the summer home
of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Seat of Endicott and North Shore Community
cols. Includes Pride's Crossing, an estate area with RR station. Inc.
