Big Hole National Battlefield
(656 acres/265 ha),
Beaverhead co., SW Mont., on North Fork Big Hole R., and the Nez
Perce Natl. Historical Trail, at edge of Beaverhead Natl. Forest,
48 mi/77 km SW of Anaconda. Authorized 1910 as
a natl. monument, designation changed 1963. Scene of 1877 battle
between U.S. troops led by Col. John Gibbons and Nez Perce Native
Americans led by Chief Joseph, as part of effort to confine
the latter to reservation.
