Big Stone Lake
, reservoir, at Ortonville (Minn.), on
Minn./S.Dak. state line, on Minnesota R.;
c.25 mi/40 km long,
1 mi/1.6 km wide; 45°18'N 96°28'W. Located
in the outlet channel of prehistoric L. Agassiz, it is the source of
the Minnesota R., which exits lake on SE end through dam and crosses S
Minn., and serves as a storage reservoir for the Minnesota Valley.
Little Minnesota R. enters N end. Formed by Big Stone Dam. Big Stone
Lake State Park (Minn.) on SE shore and Hartford Beach State Park
(S.Dak.) on W shore.
