in Larimer co., N Colo.; rises at Continental Divide N of Longs Peak in
Rocky Mt. Natl. Park; flows E, past Estes Park and Loveland, to South
Platte R. 6 mi/9.7 km SE of Greeley. Receives
Little Thompson R. 4 mi/6.4 km above its
mouth. Receives water from Colorado R. (via Alva B. Adams Tunnel and temporary pipeline). Olympus Dam
(60 ft/18 m high,
1,880 ft/573 m long; constructed 1947-1949 as
unit in Colorado-Big Thompson project) is just E of Estes Park;
forms small reservoir; hydroelectric power. Flash flood through Big
Thompson Canyon, July 31, 1976, killed 139. Little Thomson R., c.
50 mi/80 km long; rises near Longs Peak, Rocky
Mts., in NW Boulder co.; flows ENE past Berthound, joining Big Thompson
R. at Milliken.
