Biloxi (bi-LUHK-see), city (1990 pop. 46,319), Harrison co. (seat shared with Gulfport), SE Miss., 54 mi/87 km WSW of Mobile (Ala.), 77 mi/124 km ENE of New Orleans, 12 mi/19 km E of Gulfport, on a small peninsula bet. Biloxi Bay and Mississippi Sound, arm of the Gulf of Mexico; 30°25'N 88°55'W. Biloxi R. enters bay from NW. Highway and RR bridges cross entrance of Biloxi Bay to Ocean Springs (E); highway bridge crosses back bay to D'Iberville (N). The warm, coastal climate has made Biloxi a popular resort dating back to before the Civil War. Mfg. (fishing fleet and shrimp trawls; seafood, fish, and shrimp processing; bakery prods., marble prods.; printing and publishing). The 1st Eur. settlement in the lower Mississippi valley was est. 1699 across the bay at Old Biloxi (now Ocean Springs) by the French. New Biloxi was founded in 1719 and was the capital of the Fr. colony of Louisiana until 1722, when New Orleans replaced it. Scene of civil rights unrest and violence in the 1960s. In the city are Keesler Air Force Base, a U.S. coast guard air station, and a Veterans Administration medical center. Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport to W, at Gulfport. Seat of Miss. Gulf Coast Community Col.-Jefferson Davis Campus; has a symphony, and a theater group. In W is “Beauvoir” (built 1852-1854), the last home of Jefferson Davis; the Biloxi Light House (built 1848); Ft. Maurepas (1699) to NE; on coast, passenger ferry to Ship Isl., part of Gulf Isls. Natl. Seashore, large gambling casino complex on gulf; Maritime and Seafood Industry Mus.; Gulf Coast Coliseum; Arts and Cultural Center. De Soto Natl. Forest to N, Deer Isl. to SE. Inc. as a town 1838, as a city 1896.
