Formerly a great copper-producing center, but mining has declined
significantly. Mfg. (printing, publishing; electronic resistors, window
blinds). After the rich copper deposits were discovered (c.1876), the
city was built in 2 steep-sided canyons, Mule Pass Gulch and Brewery
Gulch. Inc. 1900. Nearby is Coronado Natl. Memorial to SW, which
commemorates the visit (1540) of Francisco Coronado. Historic town of
Tombstone 20 mi/32 km NNW; Lavender Pit
(open-pit copper mine) and Copper Queen underground mine to SE and NW,
tourist attraction; several ghost towns in area.
