Blackstone River
, c.50 mi/80 km long,
Mass. and R.I.; rises near Worcester, Mass.; flows SE to Narragansett
Bay at Providence, R.I. Drops 438 ft/134 m
from Worcester co. (Mass.) to the river's mouth. The river's clean
water and water power were major factors in the early development of
the area's textile industry. In 1828, a canal and lock system was
built along its entire length, and by the 1830s, there was a mill dam
for every mile of the river. Made obsolete by the construction of the
Worcester and Providence RR in 1847. Called Seekong R. below
Pawtucket.
