Block Island

Sound; 7 mi/11.2 km long,
3.5 mi/5.6 km wide; 41°08'N 71°35'W. New
Shoreham (1990 pop. 821; inc. 1672) is municipality designated as Block
Isl., with the center being Old Harbor. Visited by Du. navigator
Adriaen Block in 1614, it was settled in 1661. The murder (1636) here
of John Oldham, an Eng. trader, was the direct cause of the Pequot War.
The Native Amer. Manisses lived here. Sachem and Little Sachem ponds
recall that era. It is estimated that there were 1,000 Native Americans
on the isl. when New Shoreham was incorporated. Current topographic
maps indicate a Native cemetery here. Characterized by numerous small
ponds, low hills, and a mild climate, the isl. has long been a favorite
sport fishing and resort area. The Federal govt. built the isl.'s main
harbor, known as Old Harbor (1870-1876). Ferry services to Point
Judith and Newport (R.I.) and New London (Conn.). Its 2 harbors
accommodate local fishing boats and summer leisure craft. There are 2
lighthouses, 1 at Sandy Point, the other at South East Point.
