Bluegrass Region, the , N and central Ky., physiographic region ( c.8,000 sq mi/20,720 sq km) with Lexington at its heart; bounded NW, N, and NE by Ohio R., on other sides by semicircle of low hills (the Knobs) extending SE from vicinity of Louisville in curve enclosing Bardstown, Danville, and Richmond, then NE to the Ohio near Maysville. A gently rolling plain (elev. c.1,000 ft/305 m) of exceptionally rich phosphatic limestone soil; watered by Kentucky and Licking rivers and their forks. Inner Bluegrass ( c.2,400 sq mi/6,216 sq km), the richest part, centers on Lexington; region is known for its thoroughbred horse farms which provide contenders for famed Kentucky racetracks. Around it is a less fertile shale belt, in turn surrounded by the Outer Bluegrass, with soils similar to the inner region. Besides saddle and race horses, cattle, mules, sheep, and other livestock, region produces bluegrass seed, burley tobacco, forage crops, corn, grains.
