Its name derives from the Bogue Lusa [Native Amer.=smoky or dark
waters] creek that flows through the city. Founded in 1906 when the
lumber industry established operations in the extensive pine area. Mfg.
includes textiles, fabricated metal prods., food, machinery, furniture,
wood prods., printing and publishing. Timber; agr. (watermelons,
pumpkins; cattle, exotic fowl; dairying). Seat of La. State Univ.
Forestry School. George R. Carr Memorial Airfield nearby. Annual
