central Iowa, on the Des Moines R.; 42°02'N 93°52'W. RR and
industrial center with plants making machinery, fabricated metal
prods., plastic signs, dust filters, foods, paper prods. Laid out
(1865) by the RR, which built a long, high double-track bridge here. In
1887 it annexed the nearby rival town of Boonesboro (founded 1851).
Seat of Des Moines Area Community Col. Ski Valley Ski Area to SW; Holst
State Forest and Barkley Memorial State Park to NW; Ledges State Park
