Boonsboro , town (1990 pop. 2,445), Washington (WA) co., W Md., at W base of South Mt., and 11 mi/18 km SSE of Hagerstown; 39°31'N 77°40'W. Settled in 1788 by George and William Boone who were related to the famous Daniel, according to legend. By the 1830s, it was a major outfitting point W on the National Road. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson was surprised, unmounted, by charging Federal calvarymen near here on Sept. 11, 1862, and nearly captured. A Confederate patrol being driven out of the town by other Federals wheeled back and rescued him. An early Washington Monument, built by the citizens of Boonesboro in 1 day (July 4, 1827) here was reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and dedicated on July 4, 1936. Site of the Salem Union Church, notable because of a conflict bet. Lutheran and Reformed members over the shape of its windows. A cannon from the War of 1812, cast by a local foundry, on Main Street is the focal point of political gatherings.
