of the Atlantic Ocean; its entrance is bet. S tip of Deer Isl. (N) and
Allerton Point (S). Boston is at head of N arm (Boston Harbor), which
is entered by Mystic and Charles rivers in N and by Neponset R. in S
(Dorchester Bay); Quincy Bay is the portion lying off Quincy
(on SW shore); SE arm, sheltered on E by Nantasket Peninsula, is called
Hingham Bay. Has deepwater anchorages, dredged channels, and extensive
port facilities in its bordering cities. Boston Harbor Isls. State
Park. Largest of its isls. are Thompson, Spectacle, Long, and Peddocks.
Name Boston Harbor is sometimes applied to entire bay.
