W of Barnstable; 41°43'N 70°35'W. The canal was bridged in 1935.
Summer resort town. Tourism is the chief industry, followed by fishing
and farming. Of note are the Mass. Maritime Acad., a replica (built
1926) of the Aptucxet Trading Post (1627), Sacrifice Rock, and Wishing
Rock. Site of Cape Cod Canal Administration. Includes villages of
Bournedale, Cataumet, Monument Beach (1990 pop. 1,842), Pocasset (1990
pop. 2,756), Sagamore (1990 pop. 2,589; site of 1 of 2 bridges across
Cape Cod Canal to Cape Cod; Cape Cod electric power plant on Cape Cod
Canal; also site of state beach), and Buzzards Bay (1990 pop. 3,250).
