Braddock Heights
, summer resort (1990 pop. 4,778), Frederick
co., W Md., on crest of Catoctin Mt. (elev. here
c.1,000 ft/305 m) and
5 mi/8 km W of Frederick; 39°25'N 77°31'W.
Braddock's Springs here was used by the troops of Gen. Edward Braddock
and Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian Wars. A
marker for the National Road is near the spring, which is now
covered and provides water through a pump. A summer resort since 1896,
the ridge is only 250 ft/76 m wide here. A ski
center was established in recent years. Nearby are Gambrill and
Gathland state parks.
