Breckenridge (BREK-en-rij), town (1990 pop. 1,285), Summit co., central Colo., on Blue R., just S of Gore Range, 60 mi/97 km WSW of Denver; 39°30'N 106°02'W. Elev. 9,602 ft/2,927 m; Gold and silver mines; livestock. Tourism. Music festivals. Once a mining and trade center, with pop. of c.8,000, for group of gold-mining camps. Now a Natl. Historic Dist. (dates to 1860s) with Breckenridge ski area nearby. Quandary Peak and Mt. Lincoln are in the vicinity. Area surrounded by Arapaho Natl. Forest, Dillon Reservoir (on Blue R.) to N. Popular ski and summer resort. Continental Divide passes to S and SE.
