Maine, on the Androscoggin R. and Casco Bay, and

69°58'W. In a resort area. It is a growing commercial center for S
Maine; prods. include shoes and clothing. Bowdoin Col. (1794) and a
U.S. naval air station are in Brunswick. Maine Statehouse Theatre
operates in summer. Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
were students at Bowdoin Col. during the 1820s. Longfellow later taught
there; a house dating from 1808 was once his home. Hawthorne's first
novel, Fanshawe (1828), was printed in the town. In 1851,
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin here; her house
(now an inn) is a natl. landmark. Bowdoin Pines are 125 years old and
90 ft/27 m tall. After the Civil War, textiles
became Brunswick's chief industry, but the industry declined after
World War II. Settled as a trading post in 1628, inc. 1738.
