Buckhead
, suburban downtown, N Atlanta, Fulton co., Ga. This
former independent community was annexed to the city of Atlanta in
1952. Beginning in the 1920s, Buckhead began emerging as a desirable
location for the mansions of prominent Atlantans and soon became the
most exclusive residential dist. of the city. Known for its large,
heavily wooded, and lavishly landscaped lots filled with azaleas and
dogwood trees. Antique stores and art gal. cluster here. Nearby is
Lenox Square, built in 1959. That mall has evolved into the largest
retail shopping center in the Southeast U.S. High-rise housing,
office bldgs., and hotels now make this area a leading
mixed-use suburban downtown in the Altanta region.
