Butte (BYOOT), county ( 1,640 sq mi/4,248 sq km; 1990 pop. 181,120), N central Calif.; Oroville; 39°40'N 121°36'W. Flatlands of the Sacramento Valley in W, rise to c.6,600 ft/2,012 m in the Sierra Nevada in E. Drained by Feather R. (and its forks) and the Butte R. Parts of W border formed by Sacramento R. (NW) and Butte Creek (SW), part of S border formed by South Honcut Creek. Agr. (rice, nuts, kiwi fruit, olives, prunes, peaches; barley, corn, oats, wheat, beans; cattle); timber. Gold, silver, platinum. Extensive logging (pine, fir, cedar). Processing industries (lumber and rice milling, olive oil extracting, fruit canning). Parts of Lassen (NE) and Plumas (E) natl. forests; L. Oroville reservoir and State Recreation Area (Feather R.) in E center; Thermalito Afterbays Reservoir W of Oroville, in S center, for irrigation. Formed 1850.
