pop. 31,998), central Calif., in the Sierra Nevada; San
Andreas; 38°13'N 120°33'W. Mokelumne R. and its N fork form the N
boundary, and Stanislaus R. and its N fork form the S boundary. County
is drained by Calaveras R. and its N fork, and by South Fork Mokelumne
R. Stanislaus Natl. Forest and part of Calaveras Big Trees State Park
(redwoods) on SE boundary. Dams store water for power, water supply,
and irrigation. Winter sports area; also camping, hunting, fishing.
Gold mining; timber; cement production. Cattle; walnuts, olives; honey,
oats, grapes. Angels Camp, the scene of one of Mark Twain's
stories, and other old Calif. gold rush (1849) towns survive. Pardee
and Camanche reservoirs (Mokelumne R.) on N boundary, in NW; New
Melones and Tulloch reservoirs (Stanislaus R.) on SE boundary; New
Hogan L. reservoir (Calaveras R.) in W. Ski Area in E. Formed
1850.
