pop. 168,134), extreme SW La.; 30°13'N, 93°12'W; Lake
Charles. Bounded W by Sabine R., here forming Texas state line, bounded
in far E by Bayou Lacassine. Lake Charles city is deepwater port on
Calcasieu R. Agr. (rice, sorghum, home gardens, soybeans, honey;
cattle, horses, sheep, hogs); crawfish, shrimp, crabs; sulphur mines;
oil and natural gas wells; coal; logging. Diversified mfg. and
processing of farm, lumber, and petroleum prods. Has small lakes
(resorts; fishing). Intracoastal Waterway crosses parish in SW, just N
of parish boundary. Sam Houston Jones State Park in N center, Nibletts
Bluff Park in W, Sabine Isl. State Wildlife Area on Sabine R.
in W, Nature's Nest Swamp and L. Bienvenu in SW. Formed 1840.
