Calcasieu River
(KAL-kuh-shoo), c.
200 mi/320 km long, W central La.; rising in
Vernon parish and flowing SE into Rapides parish, then SW into Allen
parish, past Oakdale, through small part of Jefferson Davis
parish, into Calcasieu parish, and the city of Lake Charles; 30°03'N,
93°17'W. From Lake Charles the river is paralleled on W by the
Calcasieu Ship Channel, which affords ship access to the city
from Gulf of Mexico 30 mi/48 km S, and barge
access to Intracoastal Waterway 10 mi/16 km S.
River enters large natural Calcasieu Lake and Cameron parish before
exiting into Gulf through 5 mi/8 km channel.
