Calumet River
, c.8 mi/12.9 km long; NE
Ill., short stream entirely within industrial S Chicago; an important
unit of Calumet (South Chicago) Harbor, which serves Chicago and the
heavily industrialized Calumet region of NW Ind., and part of
Illinois Waterway system; 41°38'N 87°33'W. Formed just SE
of L. Calumet by Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers; flows N,
through dredged and dock-lined channel, to L. Michigan at Calumet
Harbor. Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers, rising generally E of
Gary, Ind., flows generally W, in dredged channels; handles much
shipping at Gary. Little Calumet R. is linked to Calumet Sag Channel,
and thence with Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Grand Calumet R. is
connected by ship canal to Indiana Harbor at East Chicago, Ind. Large
landfill mountains dominate area along Chicago's extreme S
end.
